    why homework
    Why Homework?

Written by Mr Richard Schwarz // Head of Secondary School

“Children are at school for a significant portion of the day – isn’t that enough?” This is a sentiment I’ve heard a ‘few’ times, and to be absolutely honest, I’ve thought it myself. There is some truth to the statement, however, we still set homework and we still expect our students to complete it. Why?

Freshwater Christian College has a homework policy, and we think it’s important. It’s so important that the policy is the first one after our Child Protection Policy in the Secondary Student Diary! Homework is important for three main reasons: for revision, for preparation and for homework. Before I delve into those three reasons, firstly I … Read the rest

This year the secondary business students have been involved in a number of events and information sessions that was organized by the Business Liaison Association (BLA).

    Alannah and Lorien in action

In Term 1 students attended the annual Young Entrepreneurs Breakfast and had the opportunity to listen to the success stories of a young entrepreneur (Ms Chelsey Phillips).  At this particular event, Alanah Tofilau and Lorien Broadwater took on the important duties to be the Masters of Ceremonies (MC’s) for the morning.  They did a great job!

Earlier this term, students interacted with String – a Melbourne based brand creator and online marketing consultant.  She encouraged students to be creative and to follow their … Read the rest

    The Great Wheelbarrow Race 2019

    The Great Wheelbarrow Race 2019

143kms. 3 days. 10 mates. 1 wheelbarrow. An unforgettable weekend.

May 17th – 19th marked the Great Wheelbarrow Race 2019, and as per annual tradition, the FCC Roadrunner team was revved and ready to run.

After months of physical training and preparation, our team of ten eager grade 12 students made their way to Mareeba to begin the three-day challenge of running with a wheelbarrow across vast expanses of scorching dirt and gravel roads.

Despite the festival vibes and excited moods of all involved, we couldn’t help but start to feel our stomachs clenching with anticipation. Before we knew it, we were off. Falls, scrapes and muscle pain became the norm as we continued to … Read the rest

    what is STEAM
What is STEAM & why it’s important

    What is STEAM

When the terms STEAM (or STEM) is mentioned in regards to education people are referring to a group of inter-related subject areas. They include Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Robotics in the school environment is often categorised as a STEAM (STEM) topic.

    What is Robotics

The heartbeat of robotics is problem-solving.

When students are developing their knowledge and skill in robotics they are given a variety of scenarios and are required to identify the main problem (or problems) and then work out the steps that are required them. In this process students design, build (engineer) and code a robot to solve the identified problem.

Three examples of robots that students in Cairns create for the … Read the rest

    Drought Relief Support

With the ongoing drought throughout Australia, our farmers are doing it tough. Freshwater Church has started Freshwater Care which will be taking donated goods to support the families of our farmers. We as a College are doing our bit in support as well.

Our Secondary teacher, Mr Woolfield, has offered to have his beard shaved off if we raise over $2000, and while it is a fine beard indeed, it’s time for it to go! Who knows what Mr Woolfield might look like under that beard? All families in the College can donate money to support our farmers (and see the beard go!) via either the Primary Office, Secondary Office or Form Class teachers. We will also be having a … Read the rest

We are halfway through Term 3 and there have already been so many successes and .. so far, with still more to come.

Thank you to our parents and students who attended our 2019 Year 11 Subject Information Night. Freshwater Christian College Art Winners
    More Than Just Plastic Bags

    More Than Just Plastic Bags

By Zara Goodman, Year 11, Freshwater Christian College

Picture this. A bustling backstage, chockfull of anxious girls as they clamber about in plastic, denim and all manner of materials. Colour confronts you from all sides: orange, blue, gold, pink. Someone’s wearing a dress covered in LED lights and someone else is wearing cards. Students are constructing makeshift changing rooms out of jumpers, styling their hair and applying the last flourishes of makeup. The air is brimming with life. A lady’s voice booms over a microphone: the show is about to begin. One by one each girl lines up in front of the stairs to the T-shaped catwalk. If everyone wasn’t already nervous, they certainly are … Read the rest

    Athletics Carnival a great success

The 2018 Inter-house Athletics Carnival saw an array of talent on display with students from Years Three to Twelve taking to the track to test their abilities in a day of great competition and fun.

The day started with each house giving their best war cries to charge the athletes out to the first events. There was some fantastic house spirit shown by the students, with the Crocs, Barras and Sharks in full colour and costume with some very interesting outfits being displayed inline with this years ‘retro’ theme.  On the track, there were some impressive times recorded with some of the newest Freshwater students displaying some excellent form.

When all of the individual events were decided, students teamed up … Read the rest
