Primary School

Our Primary school provides an outstanding program for our students to grow in a safe, compassionate, and inspiring learning environment. Our dedicated and caring teachers are passionate about guiding every student in developing their unique God-given talents and abilities. Our learning program set in tropical Far North Queensland provides the opportunity, both outdoors and indoors, for diverse learning experiences including problem-solving, critical thinking, nature-based learning, project/inquiry learning and teamwork-based activities.

Support and extension opportunities are provided to assist students with learning challenges as well as those desiring rigorous challenges. This is achieved within the curriculum and through extra-curricular offerings such as chess, robotics, instrumental music and choirs, OptiMinds, specialised sporting opportunities and our museum.

As students navigate through Primary, we lead them towards developing independent learning strategies with researching, peer collaboration, homework expectations and time organisation in order to well prepare them for a successful transition into Secondary. This is especially so in Years 5 and 6 which has a specially designed state-of-the-art facility along with an innovative transition educational program.

Why Primary at Freshwater?

Safe, Nurturing Environment

Students learn best when they feel safe, relaxed, and willing to take risks. Our highly relational staff work hard to provide a safe, nurturing, engaging and happy place for all students to do their best work.

Outdoor Learning

Improves the development of students’ core skills, including problem-solving, reasoning, creativity, curiosity, risk-identification, self-regulation; and their social, emotional, and spiritual learning.

Diverse Curriculum

We offer a varied and challenging range of learning opportunities in numeracy, literacy, sciences, technology, sport, and more.

Prep

At this level of early childhood development, it is important that our program is flexible so that we can cater for the needs of the children individually and as a group. Social skills and role-play are encouraged as an important part of learning. We encourage our Preps to be active learners through play and hands-on activities that develop their basic skills.

Junior Primary (Grades 1-2)

Entering Grade One is a very special event in the life of every child. Grade One builds on the foundations already established in Prep. There is a strong emphasis on building introductory skills in literacy and numeracy through explicit instruction and the development of strong relationships. In Grade Two, students begin to further explore mathematical concepts. Written and spoken English skills also continue to be developed.

Senior Primary (Grades 3-6)

Whilst we continue with our curriculum in Senior Primary, we also provide extra-curricular programs for our students. Their social and literacy development continues as their preparation for Secondary School begins.

Our students are encouraged to engage in language, camps, music, sport and performing arts programs. These combined with our literacy and numeracy programs helps to develop them as a whole person. There is a focus on leadership and Christian character development and we encourage them to be examples to their fellow students in Junior Primary.
