Last Friday saw the commissioning of our student leaders for 2016. At Freshwater our model of leadership is the Biblical model of servant leadership as found in Matthew 20:25-26. In this portion of Scripture, Jesus compared the leadership of the world, ‘lording it over others’ to leadership in the Kingdom of God which is contrasted to the above model, as the leader becoming the ‘servant of all’. We emphasise to our leaders that their main function is not to serve themselves in these roles but to serve and look after the interests of the College as a whole. We have allocated to all of our leaders in the College, roles in which they are able to serve the College in practical and tangible ways.
This year in the Secondary school we used the Year 12 camp held in week 3 as a final role selection from a group of leaders selected at the end of last year. The staff feedback was that this was a useful exercise and worth repeating. Of course we emphasise to our Year 12 students that they are all leaders.
Of course for many of these students this may be the first recognition of leadership abilities and qualities that will flow on into their lives beyond school. Who knows what future prominent leader may be amongst the group commissioned on Friday? The full list of leaders can be found from the link below to our website. However we do acknowledge our Secondary School Captains; Bryce Parker-Smith and Nathalie Tan and our Primary School Captains are Michael Petratos and Kyra Vincin. May God bless all our leaders as they carry out their duties in 2016.
